Cel przedmiotu

1. Particular substance aims: (a) introduction to basic issues in theory of cognition; (b) background for in-dependent analysis of epistemological papers. 2. General aim: ideas exchange ability.

Zakres tematyczny

Lecture: 1. the matter of epistemology; 2. programmes of epistemology; 3. epistemology and the problem of hier-archy of philosophical knowledge; 4 problems of the sources of knowledge; 5. problem of the limits of knowledge (epistemological realism and idealism; realism and antirealism: metaphysical, epistemological and semantic ques-tions); 6. truth (multidimensionality of the notion of truth; truth-bearers; classical and nonclassical definitions of truth; realistic and anitrealistic theories of truth; relativism and absolutism).
Classes: 1. Beliefs and its properties (epistemic ideals, rational and irrational beliefs, a priori and a posteriori knowledge); 1.1. Epistemic justification; 2. Perception (sensual data, percpetoion as a theory laden); 3. Knowledge I (certainty, induction, probability, fallibilism); 4. Knowledge II (validity, knowledge as justified belief, tacit knowledge, inference to the best explanation); 5. Relativism and incommensurability (relativism, skepticism, nihilism, anti-antirelativism, planes of incommensurability, incommensurability and indeterminacy of translation).

Metody kształcenia

Three forms of lecture: informational, conversational and synthetic.

Warunki zaliczenia

Learning outcomes verification: Each classes (exept first and the last one) are divided on two parts.
First part (45’) obeys multimedia presentation. It is evaluated according to criteria such as: adequacy of terminol-ogy used in presentation; adequate logical or historical presentation of the problem (theses, assumptions, argu-mentation). The basis for presentation of the problem is knowledge gained while reading the recommended read-ings. It will be appreciated if student broadens his or hers knowledge on the basis of optional readings or other sources (including e.g. internet sources like Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy http://plato.stanford.edu , Powszechna Encyklopedia Filozofii, http://www.ptta.pl/pef).
Second part is discussion on problems indicated in the presentation. The discussion will be a parliamentary or dialogical type appropriately to circumstances. There will be chosen a leader, who will summarise the outcome of the discussion. Participants of the discussion are obliged to be at least acquainted with recommended reading. The criteria of assessment of participants of the discussion are: (a) acquaintance of appropriate terminology; (b) adequate argumentation; (c) understanding of theses, assumptions, and arguments presented by participants of the discussion; (d) acquaintance and understanding of readings.
Grading conditions: (1) multimedia presentation (grade), (2) active participation in discussion (grade), (3) oral test (grade). Final grade: mean value (1)-(3).
Passing exam conditions: Oral exam. Student should answer on three questions (see course contents).
