Multiculturalism in Contemporary World - opis przedmiotu

Cel przedmiotu

The aim of the subject is to familiarize the student with different dimensions of cultural diversity, its genesis, contemporary forms and meaning for social life (at its individual levels) and the methods of its scientific approach. The subject is to sensitize on social inequalities and to indicate examples of individual and collective reactions to the experience of cultural difference.

Lectures:

1. The concept of culture, dimensions of cultural diversity in the context of social life
2. Conceptual categories: cultural contact, clash of cultures, diffusion, assimilation, accommodation, syncretism, enkulturacja, social distance, cultural relativism, cultural borderland, tradition, cultural heritage, memory, revitalization
3. Traditional world without alternative and contemporary multicultural world; collectivism and individualism
4. Multiculturalism and individual identity and functioning of social microstructures
5. Multiculturalism and local and regional life
6. Multiculturalism and social life at the macrostructural level
7. Global processes and multiculturalism

Classes:

1. Multiculturalism - a phenomenon, a political project or a philosophy?
2. The manifestations of multiculturalism - in the world and in Poland
3. Intercultural competence and anthropological imagination
4. Research on multicultural environments and analysis of the phenomenon of multiculturalism - examples of implementation (area, methodology, research situations, research conclusions, narrative methods on research and presentation of applications)

Metody kształcenia

Conversational lecture, discussions, work with source text, presentations, mobile methods including exploratory walks and study visits.

Warunki zaliczenia

Lecture – written exam; the condition is to obtain min. 50% points.

Classes – written work / multimedia presentation prepared independently by the student and presented during classes.

The final grade in the subject is the arithmetic mean of grades from the classes and the lecture.
