The aim of the course is to prepare students to independently solve a simple material problem in the form of an expert opinion, determining the cause of failure of a construction element or device, to independently develop quality control plans for the needs of technological processes, the selection of research methodology, the acquisition of skills to interpret results in the field of applicable standards, regulations and specifications.

Lecture:
Basic quality requirements of the product. Technical quality and the quality of the product. Features of the quality of the product's usability. Quality requirements and parameters characterising the materials, depending on their condition (production method): as-cast materials, machined, powder metallurgy materials, composite materials. Modern material testing methods: chemical composition tests (spectral and emission methods); micro-structure research (electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, quantitative micro-structure analysis); research on electrical and magnetic properties; methods for detecting and assessing defects in materials (magnetic flaw detection, X-ray and ultrasonic NDT, penetrant methods). Theoretical basis of selected technological trials. Classification of product defects in mechanical engineering and techniques for their recognition and prevention. Control techniques and improvement in the technical quality of materials and products.
Project:
In co-operation with the teacher, students propose the selection of materials for the manufacture of various machine parts, structures and tools, the course of the technological process for the machine element selected, a quality control plan, own measurements and tests, and formulation of the final conclusions.
Lecture: conventional (partly in the form of a presentation).
Project: creatively solving the task set, in teams + discussion of solution proposals + selection of the best solution.

Lecture - the condition for passing the lecture part is to obtain a positive grade from the test, covering verification of a knowledge of the basic issues. The assessment consists of positive grades for each of 5 questions. An average grade of 5 questions is entered.
Project – the condition for passing the project is obtaining a positive assessment of the project, submitted electronically and substantive justification of the solutions adopted. The final acceptance of the project requires a presentation before the training group. The assessment is based on the skills assessment component, related to the implementation of the project tasks.
Passing the course: The final mark for passing the subject is the arithmetical average of the sum of the marks from the lecture test and the project grade.
