Cel przedmiotu

To familiarize students with social determinants of politics, linkages of political processes, institutions of a political system and their social context. Ability of sociological analysis of the phenomena of political divisions and political conflicts and procedures of modern democracy.

Zakres tematyczny

  1. Power and politics in a sociological sense. The political system, types, and kinds.
  2. Contemporary democracies. Political and social specifics. Rules and procedures of democracy.
  3. Social determinants of functioning-stability and efficiency of democracy. Political attitudes and behaviour. Types of political cultures. Concept of civil society.
  4. Forms of participation in political life. Political and civil activity .
  5. Specifics of democracy in Poland. Characteristics of political culture of society and elites.
  6. Concept and the issue of political elites. Political elites in contemporary democracies.
  7. Political divisions in contemporary democracies. Opposition right-left and its social context.
  8. Social perception of democracy. Opinion polls, election polls as the tools of analysis of changes in preferences and attitudes of citizens.

Metody kształcenia

Class: texts analysis, problem-solving discussion. Conventional lecture.

The class grade will be a weighted average from the written mid-term exam (80%) and activity in class (20%).

Grades taken into account in the case of the final assessment.

Remarks:

Lecture + class graded.

Positive grading of classes and lectures (3.0-5.0) is a condition for a final credit.
