Students will gain advanced knowledge about electrodynamics, and its role in the interpretation of astrophysical processes. They will learn the mathematical tools needed, in application to observational data.
Knowledge of classical ohysics and calculus at the master of science level.
Evidence for magnetism in the Universe, Zeeman effect.
The origin of lectric and magnetic fields in astrophysics. Plasma-frozen magnetic fields, relic field hypothesis.
Dynamo effects: existence conditions, non-existence theorems, slow dynamos
Field generation conditions, thermoelectric field generation
Magnetic fields in stationary flows, fast dynamos, median field dynamos.
The rules of magneto-hydro-dynamics.
Strong magnetic fields, theory and observations of magnetars.
Radio pulsars, the role of strong electric fields.
Magnetic fields and the accretion onto neutron stars – theory and observations.
The role of magnetic fields in stellar formation.
Traditional lectures, discussion.
