The aim of the course is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge, so the student is able to describe cellular structure of organisms, plant tissues, explain the process of growth, development and differentiation in vascular plants, characterize the structure of vegetative and generative organs, recognize and characterize ecological forms of plants. During laboratory training, the student learns basic safety principles in biological laboratory, basic microscopic techniques, and preparation of microscopic slides. The student learns how to analyze microscopic slides and make the drawings of the microscopic objects.
Basic knowledge on botany at high school level.
Lecture: Aim and scope of botany. Methods of study in botany. Chemical composition of plant cell. Structure of plant cell. Symplast and apoplast. Evolution of body structure. Classification, structure, and function of plant tissues. Growth and development of plants. Vegetative organs. Primary and secondary structure of stem and root. Morphology, anatomy, and modifications of root and stem. Ecological forms of plants. Generative organs and sexual reproduction. Types of inflorences, fruits and seeds.
Laboratory: Structure of optical microscope. Basics of microscopic techniques. Basics of cytology. Cell cycle. Cell division. Meristematic and specialized tissues. Morphology and anatomy of root, stem, and leaf. Morphology of flowers. Types of inflorences, fruits, and seeds.

Lecture: final exam after laboratory training is completed. Exam (1 hour) is in a written form and consists of 70 test questions. Positive score requires corect answers to 60% questions.
Laboratory: presence in at least 75 % laboratory meetings and positive score for theoretical and practical tests. There are four theoretical tests during the semester (30 questions each, positive score requires answers to 60% questions) and one practical test at the end of semester. Practical test includes oral explanation to given preparations of the laboratory material.
