Medical English - opis przedmiotu

Cel przedmiotu

The aim of the course is mastering the English language necessary in a job of a physician. Learning the phrases used in particular clinical situations, during the outpatient and hospital therapy (communicating with the patient, his family and other members of the medical team). Learning the structures used in written scientific medical language. Widening the vocabulary and phrases necessary to describe the structure and functioning of the human body and selected medical conditions. Recognizing and correct usage of grammar and lexical structures necessary to describe  causal relationship, selected aspects of functioning the healthcare system and processes and mechanisms of functioning the human body. Developing skills of listening comprehension and reading (limited to the defined subjects) as well as interactive skills. Developing pronunciation of the basic medical terms and their correct defining.

Knowledge of English at the level of secondary school.

Warunki zaliczenia

Each unit (subject) is evaluated in the written form of a test. It can be carried out in the direct or distant learning form. The test is passed if the student obtains minimum 60% of points. Seminar ends with credit evaluation, which is the average mark obtained by the student during class participation. There are the following thresholds:

100 - 94% - very good (5.0)

93 - 87 % - good plus (4.5)

86 - 80% - good (4.0)

79 - 70% - satisfactory plus (3.5)

69 - 60% - satisfactory (3.0)

The seminar ends with credit evaluation, and the student is obliged to obtain positive marks from all the tests. The final grade is calculated based on the average mark obtained from all the tests. The results of arithmetic mean is calculated as follows: 3,25 is the final grade 3,5, 4,25 is the final grade 4,0, 4,25 is the final grade 4,5, and 4,75 is the final grade 5,0. 

Student is allowed to have two authorized (justified) absences per semester.  Student is obliged to study the material from missed classes in the form and time arranged with the teacher. If there are more than two absences, the conditions of obtaining the credit are arranged individually with the teacher.
