Cel przedmiotu

Students should gain knowledge of the physical examination of the cardiovascular system. Students will gain information about causes, symptoms, diagnostics and therapeutic management of cardiovascular diseases. Students should be able to plan and interpret additional examinations, plan possible consultations, and establish a diagnosis. During the course the students will be familiarized with the latest scientific achievements in cardiology and cardiac surgery. Students will gain basic skills necessery to conduct clinical trials and to integrate clinical knowledge and skills with the scientific evidence .

 

Wymagania wstępne

Knowledge in the field of anatomy, physiology, patophysiology, pharmacotherapy, propedeutics of surgery, propedeutics of pediatrics, propedeutics of internal medicine, pathomorphology, radiology.

Zakres tematyczny

Lectures:

  1. Optimal medical therapy, invasive treatment and cardiac surgery of ischemic heart disease – chronic coronary syndromes
  2. Acute coronary syndromes – role of an interventional cardiologist and cardiac surgeon
  3. Aortic diseases. Who is a candidate for surgery andand who is a candidate to implant a stentgraft
  4. Acute and chronic heart failure. Medical therapy and invasive treatment
  5. Cardiomiopathies – options for percutaneous and surgical treatment.
  6. Infective endocarditis. When is the right time for surgery ?
  7. Aquired heart valve diseases
  8. Cardiac arrhythmias – percutaneous ablation and cardiac surgery.
  9. Conduction disorders – indications for pacemaker implantation
  10. Pulmonary hypertensionand venous thromboembolism. Indications for percutaneous and surgical treatment ?

Clinical classes:

Classes 1 Ischemic Heart Disease

  1. Ischemic Heart Disease –chronic coronary syndromes.Indications for percutaneous and surgical revascularization
  2. Acute coronary syndromes. Percutaneous and surgical treatment
  3. Interpretation of electrocardiograms – ischemic heart disease

Classes 2 Heart failure – invasive treatment

  1. Aquired heart valve diseases. Surgical and percutaneous treatment methods.
  2. Chronic and acute heart failure treatment at the Cardiology Unit and Department of Cardiac Surgery.

Classes 3 Arrhythmias

  1. Electrophysiological examination, who is the best candidate for ablation ?
  2. Conduction disturbances – indications for cardiac pacing
  3. Interpretation of electrocardiograms, Test

Metody kształcenia

Clinical classes in groups of 5 students are conducted in the cardiology unit and outpatient clinic. In practical teaching, emphasis is placed on acquiring the skills of diagnostics and primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Student improves the skills of clinical examination, establishing the initial diagnosis and physical examination, laboratory tests interpretation, differential diagnosis, final diagnosis, and a proposal for treatment in hospitalized patients according to the topic of seminars. Clinical case presentation by a student in front of a group and an academic teacher. Medical history description under the supervision of an academic teacher. Ability to independently perform and interpret the ECG test.

Seminars – discussing clinical cases.

Lectures are conducted in the form of multimedia presentations.

Warunki zaliczenia

Students’ preparation for clinical classes can be tested by the academic teacher orally or through a written test. Participation is required to get a credit for a given class. One justified absence is allowed, making up for missed classes with another student group.

To pass the test student must score more than 60% correct answers. In the case of an unsatisfactory grade for the final test, student should proceed with the credit on the date and in the manner agreed with the teacher responsible for the classes.

The final grade is the arithmetic mean of all notes provided for the course. The results of the arithmetic mean are determined in accordance with the principle: mean 3.25 is the final mark of 3.5; mean 3.75 is the final score of 4.0; mean 4.25 is the final score of 4.5; the mean of 4.75 is the final score of 5.0.
