Aim of the course

The students will study design and and construction of a chair; they will also study the properties of wood, wooden materials, and technologies that are applied in furniture production.

Prerequisites

  • Ability to use scale.

  • Basics of orthogonal projection.

  • Basic knowledge of design process.

 

 

 

Scope

Lecture topics:

  • Construction of individual elements of a chair.

  • Analysis of different types of chairs.

  • Properties of wood.

  • Wooden materials.

  • Worldwide trends in furniture design.

  • Modern technologies within furniture design.

Class contents:

The main focus of the classes is on the realisation of the students’ projects. Classes on The Basics of furniture Design feature individual corrections. The course will examine the basics of materials and materials technologies and the practicalities of furniture design. Orthogonal projections will be used to show a piece of furniture (to scale)

Teaching methods

While much of the course is devoted to the realisation of the students’ projects, the course will involve use of multi-media presentations; slide shows and film. Students are expected to use the course contact hours to discuss design-related issues in groups.

  • In accordance with the syllabus, students will be assessed on the three stages of furniture design:

Stage I: presentation of a design concept in sketch form at a scale of 1:10

Stage II: selection of materials for furniture desidn, construction concept, choice of technology.

Stage III: presentation of a piece furniture, its detail in three orthogonal projections.
