Cel przedmiotu

The aim of the course is to provide students with advanced knowledge of the mechanisms of economic functioning as well as the tools of economic analysis, allowing for the analysis of the phenomena and processes occurring in it on a macroeconomic scale. An additional aim of the course is to develop the student's ability to indicate the direction and consequences of cause-and-effect relationships between economic phenomena.

Zakres tematyczny

Lecture:

Measurement and distribution of national income. Input-output flows in the creation and distribution of national income. Factors of economic growth and development in the short and long term. Models of economic growth. The business cycle in the economy. The role of the state in a market economy. Budget and fiscal policy. Effectiveness of fiscal policy. Taxes and the Laffer curve. Employment and unemployment in a market economy. Labour market flows and equilibrium unemployment. International division of labour. Elements of trade policy. Balance of payments and exchange rates. The world economy. Major global problems. Macroeconomic disparities of the modern world economy.

Exercises:

Determinants of national income in the short term. Components of global demand and their determinants. National income ensuring equilibrium. Limits to economic growth. The input-output model. The business cycle according to M. Kalecki. Money and monetary policy. Effectiveness of monetary policy. Bank money creation. The money creation multiplier. The two-tier banking system. Types of economic fluctuations. Features and theories of the business cycle.  Relationship between inflation and unemployment: monetarist, neoclassical, Keynesian views.

Metody kształcenia

Conventional lecture with elements of a conversational lecture. Classical problem analysis of issues covered in the course programme using basic economic categories. Didactic discussion referring to theoretical knowledge and student observations, teaching to express one's opinion and argumentation on economic issues. Solving practical tasks in macroeconomics.

Warunki zaliczenia

A prerequisite for passing the lecture is obtaining a positive grade in a written multiple-choice test covering the issues presented in the lecture. A positive mark is obtained after obtaining 55 percent of positive answers.

In order to pass the exercises, a positive grade from one colloquium is required. The test consists of three open questions and one mathematical task. Questions scored on a scale of 0 to 1 in 0.25 point increments. A pass mark of at least 2.25 points is awarded.

An additional criterion taken into account for the final grade of the exercises is the activity in class marked by the instructor. Student activity in at least 60% of classes translates into an increase of the final grade by half.
