To familiarize students with basic concepts, objectives, unit processes and typical technological lines used in municipal wastewater treatment.
Lecture programme: Types, quantity and composition of urban wastewater. Receivers and quality standards of treated wastewater. Mechanical treatment: straining processes on grids and sieves, sedimentation in sand traps and primary settling tanks, flotation and filtration. Efficiency of the mechanical part. Biochemical treatment - aerobic and anaerobic processes. Removal of biogenic compounds. Activated sludge. Biological beds. Hydrophytic treatment plants. Secondary settling tanks. Theoretical basis of anaerobic processes. Advanced methods of wastewater treatment. Characteristics of wastewater treatment facilities. Treatment of rainwater.
Programme of laboratory exercises: Characterisation of the composition of raw and treated domestic wastewater, sedimentation in Imhoff funnels, determination of the Mohlmann Index, removal of phosphorus from wastewater by coagulation, sludge thickening, sludge dewatering and conditioning.
Programme of design exercises: Technological concept of urban wastewater treatment.

Laboratory: the basis of the assessment is the completion of all prescribed in the programme laboratory exercises, positive completion of the theoretical knowledge of the exercises and timely completion of properly executed reports.The final mark of the laboratory classes is the arithmetic mean of the marks obtained from the theoretical knowledge tests of the exercises.
Project: the basis for passing the exam is submitting on time correctly executed project documentation of the technological sequence of the municipal sewage treatment plant, demonstrating knowledge of the processes and principles of technology design.
Lecture: the condition to take the exam is to obtain a positive mark from the design and laboratory exercises, the exam is in a written and/or oral form. The basis for determining the final grade is the weighted average obtained by adding: 0.6 of the grade from the lecture, 0.2 of the grade from the laboratory exercises and 0.2 of the grade from the design exercises. The weighted average is rounded to two decimal places. The final grade is determined on the basis of the weighted average according to the following rule: below 3.24 - satisfactory, from 3.25 to 3.74 - satisfactory plus, from 3.75 to 4.24 - good, from 4.25 to 4.74 - good plus, from 4.75 - very good.
