To familiarize students with the basics of soil mechanics and geotechnics, including: identifying the ground and its assessment from the point of view of the possibility of foundation of buildings, determining the geotechnical characteristics of the ground and solving simple engineering tasks.
Lecture programme:
Types of soil and their properties. Water in the ground. Field geological and engineering studies. Characteristics of selected geotechnical phenomena (capillarity, thixotropy, suffusion, landslides, etc.). Stress in soils. Strength of soils. Slope and slope stability. Engineering and geological characterisation of the subsoil. Construction disasters. Methods of strengthening the subsoil. Geotechnical solutions in environmental engineering.
Programme of laboratory exercises:
Macroscopic soil analysis, drilling, sounding. Laboratory determination of physical-mechanical properties of the soil: type, volumetric weight, consistency limits, degree of compaction, optimum moisture content and degree of plasticity.
Programme of design exercises:
Development of geotechnical documentation for a selected site.

Laboratory: the basis for passing laboratory exercises is: attendance at all classes, preparation for each class, performance of laboratory tests and preparation of reports on the conducted tests.
Project: the basis for passing project exercises is attendance at all classes, systematic preparation for each class and development, and then - submission on time and passing the project.
Lecture: the basis for passing the lecture are the positive results of the knowledge check carried out in the form agreed with the teacher at the beginning of the lecture series (credit colloquium, test, oral answer).
Grading scale: points obtained/grade: 0 - 50%/ unsatisfactory; 51 – 60%/ satisfactory; 61- 70%/sufficient plus; 71 – 80%/ good; 81 -90%/ good plus; 91 -100%/ very good. The basis for determining the final grade is the weighted average obtained by adding: 0.34 grade for the lecture, 0.33 grade for laboratory exercises and 0.33 grade for project exercises. The weighted average is rounded to two decimal places. The final grade is determined on the basis of a weighted average according to the principle: below 3.24 - satisfactory, from 3.25 to 3.74 - satisfactory plus, from 3.75 to 4.24 - good, from 4.25 to 4.74 – good plus, from 4.75 – very good.
