Aim of the course

The main goal of the course is to familiarize students with the principles of linguistic correctness in contemporary Polish, develop the ability to build correct linguistic messages in speech and writing and use language counselling and correctness dictionaries, develop awareness of increasing the level of language proficiency and the role of language skills in efficient communication.

Scope

1. Language culture as one of the basic components of personal and national culture.
2. The importance of language culture in social communication.
3. Principles of normative assessment. Criteria of linguistic correctness, their hierarchy and scope of application.
4. The most common problems with the linguistic correctness of contemporary Poles (pronunciation, inflexion, construction of statements, neologisms).
5. Colloquialization, democratization, and consumerism in language.
6. Foreign influences and words in Polish – how to deal with them?
7. Language fashion – and contemporary mass culture.
8. Language counselling in Poland: centres of conscious work on the culture of contemporary Polish, basic normative publications; the counselling in the media.
9. Dictionaries and culture. Dictionaries of modern Polish. Correct and specialized dictionaries.

Teaching methods

Conversational lecture; analysis of press and Internet texts, scientific works, radio and television statements; discussion, carrying out tasks using a text editor.
