Aim of the course

The aim is to present basic groups of plant and fungal bioactive compounds, their structure, properties, mechanisms of physiological activity, and practical use in medicine, pharmacology, and biotechnology, as well as first aid in the case of poisoning.

Prerequisites

Knowledge in plant systematics and basic biochemistry

Scope

Review of basic plant secondary compounds and their biological activities and therapeutical potential: alkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, cardiac glycosides, terpenoids, phenols. Application of plant derived compounds in pharmacology, medicine, and biotechnology. Review of fungal toxins and toxicological classification of fungi: cytotoxic, nephrotoxic, cholinergic, hallucinogen, gastro-enterotoxic fungi. Poisoning with plants and fungi and first aid.

Assignment conditions
