The course aims to enable students to improve speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as listening comprehension in English. It will help students to develop their ability to apply language functions to effective communication in everyday life. The course also aims to further develop students’ ability to use the language of mathematics and to master skills of reading, with understanding, specialist texts relating to their field of study. It also encourages students to express different ideas using complex language structures, e.g. Passive Voice, and to practise the use of grammar tenses which describe past, present and future activities. It provides an opportunity to revise the rules and master the skills of giving a presentation in English.
B1+/B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages specified by the Council of Europe.
During the course students will learn to or improve their ability to:
describe present, past and future events using different grammar tenses
revise, understand, and use Passive Voice, especially in specialist texts
exchange information relating to mathematics, computer science and data engineering
learn and use vocabulary used to describe notions and ideas connected with computer science, data exploration, data bases
expand vocabulary found in scientific articles concerning computers
understand specialist texts
prepare and deliver a presentation on a topic concerning their field of study
form questions in order to obtain information concerning Data Engineering, databases, and big data
understand questions and give answers
understand and use in practice phrases and expressions found in scientific papers concerning IT
understand and write abstracts
Team work, specialist texts analysis - translation, discussion, multimedia presentation, lexical and grammar exercises.
