Aim of the course

Introducing students to the basics of soil science - soil origins, properties and classification; the inclusion of soil as a place of life of plants and an element of the natural environment; determination of the impact of physical, chemical and physical-chemical properties of soils on their fertility, including the possibilities of regulation; familiarization with the causes and forms of soil degradation.

Prerequisites

Formal: credit of subjects: Biology and ecology, General chemistry, Fundamentals of earth sciences; Informal: Knowledge in biology and chemistry from previous semesters and geography at the high school level.

Scope

Lecture program: Basic concepts of soil science. Soil and its functions. Soil-forming factors. Soil-forming processes. Three-phase soil system. Physical, chemical and physico-chemical properties of soils. Genetic systematics of Polish soils in comparison to other classification systems. Polish soil usage classifications. Soil degradation - types and effects. Methods of preventing environmental degradation. Laboratory exercise program: Description of the soil profile. Collection of soil samples. Basic methods for field determination of soil material. Preparation of soil extracts. Determination of basic physico-chemical parameters of soils - pH, hydrolytic acidity, sum of alkaline cations, organic carbon content, granulometric composition, salinity. Colorimetry in soil analysis. Flame photometry in soil analysis. Reading soil maps. Soil condition assessment based on the results of laboratory analyzes.

Teaching methods

Methods of giving: information lecture using multimedia techniques; problem-based lecture methods seeking: problem: stock exchange of ideas in the assessment of causes and effects of chemical, physical and biological phenomena occurring in soils and degradation phenomena; situational: analyzing real soil and terrain situations by groups of students; Practice-practical: laboratory, observation and measurement in the field, an example study
