The aim of the course is to familiarize students with selected issues related to animal biology, ecology, taxonomy, nomenclature and zoogeography of contemporary living amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
Knowledge of basic zoology and ecology.
1. History of zoological gardens. Aims and roles of zoological gardens.
2. Zoological gardens’ legislation. Washington Convention (CITES) (incl. role of local authorities, veterinary and sanitary service, police, State Attorney office, customs).
3. World zoo conservation strategy.
4. Aims and methods of active animal conservation. European programmes of species conservation.
5. EAZA standards of animal maintenance in Zoos.
6. Present state and prospects of Polish zoological gardens. Review of Polish zoological gardens.
7. Selected topics on zoo management (incl. arrangement and mainteneace of enclosures and outdoor exhibit areas, feeding, breeding and participation in species conservation programmes)
8. Fundamentals of zoogeography. Regional zoogeography. Review of selected vertebrate groups.
9. Educational role of zoological gardens.
10. Field trips to Poznan and Wroclaw zoological gardens
