Students should develop a good understanding of the most important terms of the course’s topic in English and to analyze respective English literature; develop a detailed research proposal of a self-chosen aspect of the relationship of birds and people; conduct field work and sample data, by using a variety of methods (survey, behavioural observations, questionnaires); discuss own research results in the context of the current scientific knowledge. Students should be able to work in groups; exchange effectively ideas and own research results with other groups; present project work in front of class.
Basic knowledge of ecology (as taught in an introductory course)
Commercial interest of humans in birds (hunting, breeding, trade, bird watching), domestication, conflicts between humans and birds sharing the same habitat (especially cities), humans as drivers of birds’ extinction, conservation efforts, birds as subjects in scientific research, ornithology as „scientia amabilis”.
Lecture, multimedia presentations, practical field work, seminar work (literature)
