In the first part of the course, the objective is to present the most crucial stages of the formation of British civilisation, which have led to the creation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, as well as to demonstrate the evolution of the British nation and the events which have influenced its growth. By showing the major changes in the territorial, administrative, structural and economic processes, this course is structured to enable students to notice and understand the changing political and economic position of the country throughout the ages and its significance as well as its impact on the history of Europe and of the world.
In the second part of the course, the content is structured to encourage an understanding of change - social, historical, political, cultural, traditional and economic change, students have a chance to explore the development of the United States from its origins as a land inhabited by tribes to the united country that exists today
The command of the English language that enables the student to understand and comprehend the lectures' content.
The part devoted to British history includes the following topics: the invasions of the Celts, the Romans, the Saxons and the Vikings; Norman conquest and feudal rule, the power of the kings of England, the beginnings of Parliament, ordinary people and their life in the early Middle Ages, Wars with Scotland and France, Plagues, The Poor in Revolt, the Hundred Years’ War, the Wars of the Roses; The Tudors - the new monarchy, the English Reformation, Mary’s and Elizabeth I’s reign, The Stuarts: Parliament against the Crown in the 17th century, Religious disagreements and The Civil War, Republican Britain: Oliver Cromwell, The New Constitutional Monarchy, Science in the age of thinking; The 18th century: Politics and finance: R. Walpole and the South Sea Bubble, Wilkes and liberty, The American War of Independence from the British perspective, The Industrial Revolution, Society and religion – Methodism, Revolution in France and the Napoleonic Wars; The 19th century: reforms and workers’ revolt; The Victorian Era: Victoria and her Empire, Population and politics from the mid-19th century. Some elements of the Welsh, Irish, Scottish history are are incorporated in the overall presentation of the above topics.
The major topics related to US history include: Pre-Columbian Indian Civilisation; The Voyages of Christopher Columbus; Features of Colonial Life in America: Pilgrim Fathers and Puritans; The American Revolution; The American Constitution; The Century of Territorial Expansion; The Beginnings of Industrial Revolution; North and South – comparison; The Compromises and Crisis of Union; The Civil War; Reconstruction; The USA in the 19th century: the Great Plains, the Gold Rush, Inventors and Industries, Railroads and Cattlemen, The Amerindians’ Last Stand; Progressivism and reforms at home and the new imperialistic policy abroad, The First World War, The Roaring Twenties; Crash and Depression; Dealing with the Crisis; The Second World War; Problems at home: MaCarthynism, poverty, segregation, social injustice, riots against the Vietnam War, the Watergate Affair; The Cold War: Korean War, Armaments Race and The Space Race, Crisis over Cuba, The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement and the internal problems during the presidency of J. Kennedy, L. B. Johnson and R. Nixon.

Course attendance, which is regarded as a precondition for being allowed to sit for an examination. At the end of a term a student is expected to take a written examination, which consists of open-ended questions and multiple choice questions.
