Cel przedmiotu

Aims:

The course aims at acquainting the participant with the structure of the English word, phrase, clause and discourse as well as with ways of analysing sounds, sound sequences and meaning.

Zakres tematyczny

Course content

 

1. Introductory matters: Prescriptive and descriptive approaches to grammar, parts of speech, deep and surface structure, grammatical categories, clause constituents.
2. Categories of utterance constituents: phoneme, morpheme, word, group, phrase, clause, duality, productivity, content and function words, head+modifier
3. Phonological units of language: phonetics vs. phonology, vowels, consonants, sonority, allophones, assimilation, phonotactics, word stress
4. Morphology and word-formation: morpheme, allomorph, morpheme typology, word-formation, inflection
5. Lexical semantics: denotation, connotation, atomistic and holistic approach to meaning, lexical relations, transparency and opaqueness, universal attributes and fuzziness
6. Discourse analysis and pragmatics: defining pragmatics, speech event structure, deixis, context, coherence, cohesion, cooperative principle, the role of background knowledge

In order to obtain credit and be admitted to the final test, a participant has to pass all 6 topical tests. The final exam is based upon the content specified in ‘course content’.
