Cel przedmiotu

The subject objectives include the following aspects:

  • to provide information on the fundamental differences between various languages and English with regard to phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicon, as well as social and cultural issues;
  • providing knowledge concerning the classification of languages, such as genetics and typology, and problems connected with the analysis of common features;
  • to provide information on phenomena resulting from interlanguage contacts, such as the introduction of English words into Polish and the linguistic transfer occurring when Poles learn English;
  • developing the ability to analyse lexical, phonological and grammatical contrasts between various languages and English in the context of general differences between the two languages;
  • developing the ability to use basic linguistic terminology to describe forms/structures in Polish, English and other languages.

Wymagania wstępne

Prerequisites for the Contrastive Grammar course include the following:

  • Knowledge of basic linguistic terms and terminology.
  • Ability to read and understand texts in English at a level which enables the comprehension of the didactic material.
  • Ability to write and speak in English at a level that allows for class discussion and presentation.
  • Willingness and motivation to deepen knowledge of languages and their grammar.

Zakres tematyczny

The thematic scope for the subject of contrastive grammar includes the following:

  • Comparison of basic elements of grammar, such as phonology, morphology, syntax and lexis, in Polish and English.
  • An analysis of phenomena arising from cross-linguistic contact, such as the influence of English on Polish.
  • Discussion of the classification of languages, such as genetics and typology, and the problems associated with the analysis of universal features.
  • Analysis of cultural and social issues related to both languages.
  • Comparison of different variants of English.
  • Analysis of mistakes made by Poles learning English and how to avoid them.

Warunki zaliczenia

The grade for the course consists of the results achieved in the current test papers (80%) and systematic and active participation in classes (20%). A prerequisite for obtaining a positive result in the course is obtaining min. 60% of the aforementioned areas to be assessed.
