Cel przedmiotu

The course aims to:

  • developing the ability to formulate and solve complex and atypical linguistic problems and to perform tasks under conditions not fully predictable to the student (e.g. sight translation),
  • training the student in the ability to select appropriate sources and information in the process of translating medical texts, and to apply methods and tools appropriate to the skills of a philologist in the process of translating a medical test,
  • acquainting the student with the basic vocabulary and grammatical structures present in English used in the work of employees working in the broadly understood medical industry, with particular emphasis on these aspects when translating into Polish, so that the student is able to use specialist language with ease.

Wymagania wstępne

The entry requirements stipulate that the participant will have:

  • basic knowledge of English to enable participation in the course
  • basic knowledge of medical terminology in the native language
  • technical skills on word-processing software such as Microsoft Word, as well as the ability to use online translation tools.

Zakres tematyczny

The thematic scope of the course includes the following topics:

 

  • General structure of the human body, anatomical position, body cavities.
  • Structure, function and diseases of the skin.
  • Skeletal and articular system - selected topics.
  • Respiratory system - selected issues.
  • The circulatory system - selected issues.
  • The digestive system - selected issues.
  • The genitourinary system - selected issues.
  • The nervous system - selected issues.
  • Taking a patient history, physical examination, specialised examinations.
  • Vocabulary and terms in the various medical specialties.
  • Medical office equipment, hospital organisation.
  • Basic medical procedures and pharmacotherapy.
  • Selected medical issues.

Warunki zaliczenia

The course grade consists of the evaluation of periodic review papers/colloquia (50%), current assignments (ongoing skills control) (30%) and observation of student activity and progress (20%). A prerequisite for passing the course is obtaining an overall average of at least 60% of the aforementioned components.

An optional subject selected from the 'elective subjects' offer on the basis of student declarations; the subject is started according to the needs and interest of students.

 

Detailed information on the realisation of the thematic scope, methods of verification and conditions for passing are presented by the teacher during the first class of the course. Depending on student interest, the teacher has the right to modify the thematic scope.
