The course will focus on the recent thematic and forma, tendencies in the recent English language literature (from around the turn of the 20th and the 21st centuries until now). Students will have a chance to read a number of texts - mainly fiction which comments on the changes that have been taking place in the world - climactic, political, and technological, and so reflect the complexity of the contemporary world. Among the topics for discussion there will be: climatic disasters, relationships between the human and nature, between the human and the animals, human and animal rights, trans- and post-humanism, globalisation, as well as migration; We are also going to see how the development of technology has influenced the form of contemporary fiction (e.g. twitterature).
Interest in literature and openness to challenges will be an asset in the course.
An overview of new trends in English language literature will be presented at the beginning of the course, yet only some of them will be discussed more broadly during subsequent classes (due to time limitation of the course); the focus of the course will be on eco-critical theory and so we will address problems such as - relationships between the human and nature, status and rights of animals, human rights and post-humanism.
