Cel przedmiotu

The aim of the subject is:

  1. Familiarizing students with the main concepts in the field of semantics, linguistic pragmatics, and (critical) discourse analysis.
  2. Developing the skills for independent analysis of various forms of discourse using knowledge from the fields of semantics, linguistic pragmatics, and (critical) discourse analysis.
  3. Developing the ability to identify linguistic indicators related to the concept of language etiquette in texts.
  4. Deepening linguistic knowledge regarding methods and theories aimed at explaining complex relationships between them.
  5. Organizing linguistic knowledge encompassing key issues and selected topics within the scope of advanced detailed knowledge relevant to the philology education program.
  6. Cultivating skills in the methods of analysis and interpretation of texts based on existing linguistic theories, as well as the ability to apply these theories to analyze specific content.

Wymagania wstępne

The prerequisites include the following aspects:

  • Proficiency in the English language at a level that enables active participation in classes.
  • Familiarity with basic theoretical concepts in English linguistics.

Zakres tematyczny

The thematic scope includes a discussion of the following topics:

  • Discourse concept
  • Semantics vs. pragmatics - an introduction to terminology
  • Semantics and its use in discourse construction
  • Pragmatics and its use in discourse construction
  • Analysis of selected discourse types (political discourse, advertisements, etc.)

Metody kształcenia

Conventional/traditional lecture, problem-based lecture, case method, problem-solving method, discussion, group work, individual work, project, use of technology in teaching.

Warunki zaliczenia

The grade for exercises consists of the results achieved during knowledge presentations (tests, written assignments, projects) (80%), and regular and active participation in discussions during classes (20%). Obtaining a positive grade for the course is conditional upon achieving a minimum of 60% for the entire course.
