The course is intended to discuss, through an appropriate selection of topics and literature, the complexity and significance of the Cold War.

1. The Second World War and its influence on development of the divided world.
2. Speeches of prominent politicians representing the world powers (Byrnes, Molotov, Churchill).
3. The Greek Civil War and the Berlin Crisis.
4. Development and mutual rivalry of the two German states.
5. The year of 1956 and its consequences.
6. The Second Berlin Crisis, the Caribbean Crisis, the Vietnam War.
7. The space rivalry, the economic rivalry, the cultural rivalry.
8. The détente period of the 1970s.
9. The Soviet-Afghan War, the star wars.
10. The Revolutions of 1989.
11. The dissolution of the Soviet Union, the Warsaw Pact, and the system of the satellite states in Central Europe.
12. The withdrawal of the Soviet forces from Germany, Poland, and Czechoslovakia; START treaties; the end of the Cold War?
13. The modern reminiscences of the Cold War.
