Cel przedmiotu

The aim of the course is to familiarize its participants with the early medieval history of the British Isles in the context of the Scandinavian expansion in Northern Europe.

1. The Viking Age – an introduction.
2. Inhabitants of the British Isles in the Early Middle Ages.
3. Polities of the British Isles before the Viking Age.
4. Early medieval Scandinavia.
5. Trade and seafaring of the early medieval Scandinavians.
6. Viking warfare.
7. The beginning of the Viking Age in England and Scotland.
8. The Vikings and Ireland.
9. The first wave of Viking attacks on England (835-954).
10. The Viking kingdom of York, Scandinavian settlement, and the second wave of Viking attacks on England (980-1035).
11. The Vikings in the eyes of the Anglo-Saxons.
12. Proper names of Nordic origin as a manifestation of Scandinavian presence in the British Isles.

Warunki zaliczenia

Conditions: Minimum of 3 points for active participation in the course.

Rating scale: 0-2 pts - 2; 3 pts - 3; 4 pts - 3,5; 5 pts - 4; 6 pts - 4,5; >6 pts - 5.

Students who obtain less than 3 pts are obliged to take a final test.
