Aim of the course

The aim of English Language Classes (ELC), comprising 4 courses: Grammar, Integrated Skills, Reading and Writing, Listening and Speaking, is to advance and consolidate the student's language skills to reach a language level of C1.

Scope

GRAMMAR

Consolidation of grammar at an advanced level, scope: verb constructions, indirect questions, inversion, negation, emphases. Error correction in sentences and in texts. Sentence transformations, word formation.

INTEGRATEDD SKILLS

Expanding vocabulary (collocations, idioms, academic language) and studying culture of English-speaking countries at an advanced level, by working mainly with authentic, longer texts of considerable difficulty, from a variety of fields. Studying vocabulary in context.
Analysing shades of meaning in a text; meanings conveyed directly and indirectly. Error correction in sentences and in texts. Sentence transformations, word formation.

READING AND WRITING

Text analysis: critical reading skills: determining the purpose of a text and detecting its tone, identifying the author’s position/theoretical perspective,  reconstruction of the author’s line of argumentation to detect the article’s internal logic in academic and scientific texts.

Developing  synthesizing skills (comparing and contrasting): writing a synthesis of  two academic articles/research papers selected by the teacher; writing a synthesis of academic articles/research papers selected by the student for their own diploma paper.

LISTENING AND SPEAKING

Listening comprehension skills: authentic texts with a high level of complexity, interpretation (recognising humour, irony, metaphor, etc.), anticipating the occurrence of information in a listening text.
Advancing the speaking skills: presentations using multimedia techniques, participation in a debate, in a fairly wide range of subjects and taking into account the complexity of the topic under discussion.
Non-verbal communication skills (body language, diction, voice modulation, interaction with listeners) and negotiation and persuasion skills in discussion are developed.

Teaching methods

Individual, pair and group work. Text study, brainstorming, mind map, creating presentations, demonstration and observation (student presentations), audio and video demonstrations, discussion of the topics presented in the text,  written answer, oral answer, panel discussion,  debate.

Assignment conditions

Credit with grade.

To pass English Language Classes (ELC) you need to receive a positive grade for each component course. Obtaining a negative grade from any component course will result in a negative grade for the entire ELC block. The final grade for ELC block is the average of the component course grades.

Conditions for individual component courses credits:

Achieving threshold levels for planned oral and written assignments (60%); regular attendance and active participation in classes for each component course.
