Cel przedmiotu

In the course of lectures you will be acquainted with a selection of phenomena, authors and works in the history of English literature, from its beginning till today; literary epochs will be discussed in a chronological order to show the changes which occurred them and to explain how they influenced the literary works that appeared in each epoch. 

The literature reading course, which complements the course of lectures, will give you a chance to read, analyse and interpret a number of works from various epochs discussed in the lectures.

 

Wymagania wstępne

There are no formal requirements, however, at least a basic knowledge of literary analysis methods, as well as of the history of Great Britain, will be an asset.

Zakres tematyczny

Lectures: history of English literature from its beginnings till now: Anglo-Saxon heroic and religious poetry; medieval literature: medieval worldview, French influences, new genres; Renaissance: a change from the medieval worldview, the sonnet; developmentd of drama - from its medieval origins to its 'golden age'; Shakespeare; Metaphysical poetry (English Baroque); the Enlightenment: a new worldview, neoclassicism; birth of the novel in the 18th century; romanticism - its philosophical tenets; themes and formal features; Victorian times: development of the novel ; modernism - new fiction and new poetry; contemporary literature - its main features and selected representatives.

Reading classes: analysis and interpretation of the texts from the primary sources list (below), from the beginning od English literature till Romanticism.

Metody kształcenia

Lecture: formal, semi-formal, audio-visual.

Reading course: text analysis, discussion, group work.

Warunki zaliczenia

Classes: to get a credit in the literature reading course you will be expected to participate in the classes actively, i.e., show your good knowledge of the assigned primary and secondary texts by applying it to the analysis and interpretation of the texts selected for discussion. You will be also asked to do home assignements and write planned tests, the form of which will be decided by the teacher running the course.The passing threshold for tests is 60%.

Lectures: to get a credit in the course of lectures you will be expected to participate in it regularly and actively -  showing a good knowledge of the texts assigned in informal lectures. 

Exam: you will be expected to show a good knowledge of the history of English literature  (secondary sources) and of the texts discussed during the lectures and in the reading classes (primary sources). The passing threshold is 60% of its total score.

More information on the tests and the exam will be provided by the teacher running the course at the beginning of the semester.
