Cel przedmiotu

The course aims to give the basic knowledge on the original American genre of the short story as well as to practice the skills of analysis and interpretation of the narrative text.

Zakres tematyczny

A survey of the original American literary genre of the short story, from Washington Irving's legends, through the elements of the fantastic and horror of the XIX century, formal experiments of modernism and postmodernism, to the contemporary ethnic short story. The selected works of the renowned representatives of the genre will be discussed, e.g., E. A. Poe, N. Hawthorne, E. Hemingway, F. O'Connor, and popular writers e.g., S. King, J. Lahiri. We will consider the various aspects of American identity and experience. Additionally we will practice the skills of the narrative analysis.

Accreditation with a grade on the basis of in-class participation, and completion of the assigned tasks.
