Cel przedmiotu

To familiarise students with contemporary philosophy of culture.
To introduce students to key concepts, methods, debates, and controversies in the fields.
To provide students with opportunities to discuss current cultural issues.

Zakres tematyczny

Definitions of culture.
Philosophy of culture and its place among other academic disciplines.
Major research paradigms in culture theory: sociocultural evolutionism, diffusionism, configura-tionalism, functionalism, structuralism, critical theory.
Selected topics in philosophy of culture: nature vs culture, culture and knowledge, evolution of culture, identity (gender, nationality, etc.), sacrum and profanum, technology and media, cultural hegemony, body in culture.
Works of selected philosophers of culture:
Spengler – the decline of the West.
Freud – civilization and its discontents.
Plessner and Gehlen – culture vs human nature.
Frankfurt school – critical theory.
Levi-Strauss: hidden structures of culture.
Bourdieu: habitus, field and symbolic capital.
Foucault, Habermas, Fairclough – cultural studies and discourse analysis.
Baudrillard, Zizek, Agamben – crituque of contemporary culture.
McLuhan, Ong, Flusser – culture and media determinism.
Kristeva, Haraway – feminist cultural theory.
