The aim of the course is providing students with knowledge about typical developmental processes as well as developmental disorders, and indicating the most effective methods of assisting development of children and adolescents. Developmental difficulties of children with special needs will be stressed.
Basic knowledge of mental processes.
Typical processes at subsequent stages of development in childhood and adolescence: cognitive, emotional and social development, moral reasoning development.
Fostering memory and creative thinking: strategies for solving problems, stimulation of creativity.
Profoundly gifted and sensitive children: their special needs, problems with social relations, school difficulties, methods of assisting development.
Children with emotional disorders: long–term consequences of emotional trauma (including sexual abuse, breaking of mother-child bond), separation anxiety disorder.
Developmental disorders caused by biological factors: autism, Asperger’s syndrome, ADHD – typical symptoms and ways of assisting.
Adolescents: identity creation as a developmental task, identity crisis, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa.
Discussion, case studies, didactic games, presentations.
