The student will have a broader understanding of literature, its features and functions, particularly of the distinctiveness of literary language. The student will know basic concepts and terms used in literary studies and have skills needed to analyze and interpret literary texts, including the ability to reflect on the implications of the meaning-making elements of the structure and composition of texts.

The concept of literature as a product of culture, distinctive aspects of literary texts, definition(s) and functions of literature. Basic concepts and terms (literary genres, terms related to versification and stylistics). Structure and composition of literary texts and meaning-making elements of texts, such as types of narration, methods of characterization, construction of time and space, characters' discourse, style and tone. The concepts and terms discussed in class are illustrated with examples from texts sourced from the canon of English-language literature analyzed and interpreted in class.
