In the course you will have a chance to study a number of literary works (see 'Primary sources' below) that have been selected from English literature of the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The aim of the course is not only to acquaint students with the chosen works, but also to help them apply their critical reading skills to the reading of literary texts.
There are no formal requirements, however, a good knowledge of the history of English literature will be expected, and at least a basic knowledge of literary analysis methods will be an asset
- the novel of the 19th c.
- modernist literature - new fiction - the novel (Virginia Woolf) and the short story (James Joyce and Katherine Mansfield)
- social criticism and a new perception of human relationships in D.H. Lawrence's fiction
- feminist interpretations of culture codes in Angels Carter's stories
- dystopian fiction - William Golding's Lord of the Flies and Kazuo Ishiguro's Never Let Me Go
- selected contemporary Irish and English short stories

To get a credit in the course you will be expected to participate in the classes actively, i.e., show your good knowledge of the assigned primary and secondary texts by applying it to the analysis and interpretation of the texts selected for discussion. You will be also asked to do home assignements and write planned tests, the form of which will be decided by the teacher running the course.The passing threshold for tests is 60%.
More information on tests and assignements will be provided by the teacher running the course at the beginning of the semester.
