Aim of the course

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with selected issues related to the problems of social differentiation in both theoretical and empirical terms, as well as to prepare students to recognize and analyze contemporary problems of social diversity.

Lectures

  1. Cultural continuity and change in culture in the context of social life.
  2. Loss of subjectivity and threat to identity - problems of cultural, political and economic domination in the contemporary world.
  3. Ecology and climate in the context of culture and social life.
  4. New cultural ideas - an opportunity or a threat?
  5. The Fall of Western Civilization?

Classes

  1. Contemporary demographic trends in Poland and in the world - spontaneous processes and planned activities.
  2. World crises (e.g. migrations, pandemics) and concepts of overcoming them.
  3. Civilization diseases in the context of social life.
  4. The development of science and new technologies and social life.
  5. Social inequalities on a global scale (eg regions of wealth versus regions of poverty) - a case study.

Teaching methods

Conventional lecture, exercises: work with a book, multiple discussion, classical problem method. e-learning, blended learning

Assignment conditions

Completion of the classes based on the grade from the paper and it’s presentation (compliance with the subject, correct structure of the paper, language, reliability, independence of the paper, appropriate selection of the literature of the subject).

Lecture – passing the written exam.

The final grade in the subject is the arithmetic mean of the exam grade and the classes grade.
